How To Use Tenses

The present tense is used when writing about something that is happening at that moment. Sometimes a fiction writer may use the present tense to make their writing more immediate, as in this example from The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger:

‘It’s hard being left behind. I wait for Henry, not knowing where he is, wondering if he’s okay. It’s hard to be the one who stays.’

It is also common for essays to be written in the present tense. For example:

‘Stevenson suggests that man is inherently evil by showing the changes in Jekyll’s character as he develops from a friendly, kind and well-mannered gentleman into a violent criminal.’

However, if you are writing about the writer of the text when they are no longer alive, you can use the past tense. For example:

'Dickens was interested in those characters on the edges of society.'

Using Different Tenses

One way to add detail to your writing is to include a range of tenses, which include the present, perfect or future tense.

For example, you could write about where you currently live, where you used to live and where you hope to live in the future.

Question

Note if the sentences below are in the present, perfect or future tense. Remember to translate the sentences too.

  • Reveal answer
  • Ich habe in einem Bungalow gewohnt. – I used to live in a bungalow. (Perfect)
  • Er wird in einem Doppelhaus wohnen. – He will live in a semi-detached house. (Future)
  • Wir wohnen seit Jahren auf dem Land. – We have lived in the country for years. (Present)
  • Sie hat früher in einer Wohnung in der Stadt gewohnt. – (Perfect)
  • Hast du schon an der Küste gewohnt? – Previously she lived in a flat in town. (Perfect)
  • Sie werden in einem großen Einfamilienhaus wohnen. – They will live in a big detached house. (Future)
  • Ich wohne jetzt in einem kleinen Reihenhaus in einer großen Stadt. – I now live in a little terraced house in a big town. (Present)
  • Sie wird in einer modernen Wohnung in Berlin wohnen. – She will live in a modern flat in Berlin. (Future)

When you want to say how long you've lived somewhere, you must use seit (since) + the present tense. In German you are really saying, 'we are living there since 12 years', rather than 'we have been living there for 12 years', as in English.

Question

Practise using different tenses by translating the English sentences below into German.

  • She will live in a town.
  • I used to live in the countryside.
  • He lives in a bungalow.
  • We live in a flat.
  • I will live in a village.
  • We used to live in a terraced house.

  • I will live in a village. – Ich werde in einem Dorf wohnen. (Future)
  • We used to live in a terraced house. – Wir haben in einem Reihenhaus gewohnt. (Perfect)
  • Conditional tenseThe forms ich würde, ich möchte and ich wäre are examples of the conditional tense.
The conditional tense is used to say what might happen under certain conditions. It is called the conditional tense as it is dependent on a certain condition, eg you can only fulfil one thing on the condition that another thing happens.
They are all good verbs to include when answering the following question:
Wo möchtest du wohnen? Warum? - Where would you like to live? Why?

    Verb Tenses: Introduction

In writing and speaking, you often have to show when something happens. Is it taking place now? Later? Did it happen earlier in the day, a week ago, a year ago, or when dinosaurs roamed the earth? In English, tense is used to show when something happens.
In this section, you learn how to use verbs to indicate when an action occurred. First, I explain the different tenses and how they are used. The focus here is on regular verbs (the nice cooperative ones) and irregular verbs (the ones that need bran cereal). There's even a special section on lie/lay, the verb duo that reduces even linebackers and mothers-in-law to quivering masses of jelly.
